It’s really a people science. You’re studying people’s choices and tastes and what they value. Learning about that science was very important for me. Ancient civilizations believed that the world was set upon an enormous sapphire, which painted the sky blue with its reflection. In ancient times, Sapphires were thought to be protective against envy, and even against poisoning. A common belief was that a venomous snake placed in a Sapphire vessel would rapidly die! Ground to a powder, the blue stone was believed to cure colic, rheumatism and mental illness, and to strengthen eyesight.
1740 Starting in 1740, Berlin develops into a center of the Enlightenment and of constant construction under Friedrich the Great. The large representative buildings put up in this era still dominate the cityscape around Unter den Linden: the Staatsoper opera house (1742), the Prince Heinrich Palace (Prinz Heinrich Palais, 1756, now Humboldt University), St. Hedwig’s Cathedral (1773), and the Old Library (Alte Bibliothek, 1780)..
“Initially, we had approval from Bernie to use 40 minutes of F1 footage,” Kapadia said. “But we knew right away that to make the film we wanted to make, we needed more like double that. So we met with Bernie and told him the scope of the film, and he said, ‘Whatever you need.’ Bernie was very good to us.”.
A: The number of underrepresented minorities in academic medicine remains very small, and what we see at the College of Physicians and Surgeons is absolutely consistent with what we see nationally. And Canadian medical schools show that women and underrepresented minority faculty have slower career progression, are less likely to have high quality mentoring and sponsorship relationships and are less likely to remain in academic medicine. These groups also experience an increased burden of service since they then are disproportionately asked to do academic service.
Faculty and students of the School of the Arts and across the University are actively engaged in a variety of partnerships in the community, teaching, mentoring, and performing for local students on a regular basis. In just the last year, these have included the children’sLet’s Readafternoon and the summerShall We Danceseries which welcomes families and neighbors to Columbia’s campus. The University was a partner in the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival, a collaboration with the Apollo Theater, Harlem Stage and Jazzmobile.
